- You stay on topic. With an outline, you don’t have to worry about going off on a tangent or having a scattered blog post.
- You have less editing to do. When you stick to the outline you have created, you don’t have as much fluff to remove from your post before you publish it. It makes the entire process much faster!
- You won’t deal with writer’s block. Once you have mapped out your post, you can breeze through it without feeling stuck or like you don’t know what to say.
As you can see, outlining your blog posts before you start writing them helps in a variety of ways. But how do you create an effective outline for your posts? By making sure you have the right parts put together in an organized style that will allow you to write blog posts faster.
Components of a Good Blog Post Outline
- Captivating Title – Yes, you need to consider your title as part of your outline. It’s your first impression to the reader. Don’t you want them to click through and actually read the post? You may want to save this to the end, as you may have a better idea for a title once all of the words have flowed from your head to the computer screen.
- Interesting Introduction – Okay, so you get the reader to click, but now you need to further grab their interest with your first paragraph. I like to start with a question, one that they can relate to and that will make them want to keep reading to find out the solution to whatever problem the post is solving. If they can’t relate, they probably won’t benefit from your blog post anyway! You could also start with a story that will hold their attention.
- Several Supporting Points – So you have the reader ready to learn how to do whatever it is you are teaching. Now, wow them with the ways to solve their problems! This can be done in a simple list style or a step-by-step tutorial. In your outline, summarize each tip or step that you want to include in the post so you can write blog posts faster without leaving anything out.
- Strong Conclusion – Wrap up everything you have said in this last paragraph. Highlight the main points of your post. You may also want to plan for a call to action here, such as getting your reader to subscribe or download a opt-in freebie.
When you are outlining your blog posts to write them faster, you can do this wherever you are most comfortable. No matter how much technology I own, I am still a pen and paper girl at heart. Sometimes, I will close my laptop and sit outside with a notebook and pen to outline ideas and posts.
If I don’t have the time to brainstorm with paper, I will create a quick outline in Microsoft Word or right within the WordPress dashboard. No matter where you do it, having this outline fleshed out will allow you to write blog posts faster!
