Wondering what must have baby registry items you need on your list? Hopefully, this blog post will shine some light on planning the perfect registry for you and your pending arrival.
As a mom of two, I have tried lots of the baby products and gear out there. My sons were born three years apart, so there was new baby gear on the market to try with each of them. Some items we used for both boys, but I also gave new things a try the second time around.

30 Must Have Baby Registry Items
1. Baby Bassinet
Delta Children Sweet Beginnings BassinetBoth of our boys slept in a bassinet similar to this one when they first came home from the hospital. The bassinet was in our room, so we could easily get up for a feeding or diaper change during the night.
Its portability made it easy to use throughout the house for nap time as well. The casters locked too, so you could ensure your baby was safe when the bassinet was not being moved.
I especially liked the shelf beneath the bassinet, where I could stash extra diapers, wipes and blanket to keep everything on hand. The vibration and music was great too, it helped lull our little ones to sleep.
2. Baby Wipe Warmer
Munchkin Warm Glow Wipe Warmer and Diaper Bag Dispenser Set (Green)No little booty likes a cold, wet wipe pressed against it during a diaper change! I didn’t use a baby wipe warmer for our first, but I decided to give one a go with our second son. He didn’t flinch or cry out as much when the warm wipe hit him than my older son did during a diaper change.
This Munchkin baby wipe warmer even comes with a nightlight that will make changes during the night easier. It shuts off automatically after 10 minutes or with the off switch. The warmer works from the top down so your wipes further down the stack don’t dry out or turn brown from the heat.
Playtex Ventaire Advanced Bottle, Blue, 9 Ounce (Pack of 3)
For both boys, we only used Playtex Ventaire Bottles. They didn’t seem to cause much gas and the slow and fast flow nipples were perfect for both kids. We easily switched flows as our sons got older so they weren’t frustrated with the milk coming out too slowly.
These bottles were easy to clean with a bottle brush and held the right amount of liquid for our boys with no leaking. We would pack them in the diaper bag filled with water so all we had to do was mix in the formula at feeding time.
NUK Baby Talk Puller Pacifier in Assorted Colors and StylesLuckily, we didn’t have to go through many different pacifiers to find the right one for my older son. These Nuk pacifiers worked like a charm, three days after he was born and it was difficult to console him between feedings and diaper changes. I swore I would never use a paci before becoming a mom, but my oldest had other ideas!
These pacifiers come in different sizes as your child grows. There are also lots of different colors and patterns for boys, girls, or gender neutral if you aren’t finding out the sex before the little one arrives. I like the looped handle on the back. They worked great with the paci holders that clipped to my son’s shirt or his car seat strap.
Pampers Swaddlers Newborn Diapers Size 1, 216 CountYou can never have too many diapers with a new baby in the house. It seems that newborns sometimes need to be changed hourly! Add a few boxes of newborn and size 1 diapers to your baby registry, as you will need to stock up before the little one arrives.
We used Pampers Swaddlers the most for our boys when they were infants. They didn’t seem to leak as much as other brands and they always provided a good fit. We also really liked the yellow line down the center of the diaper, which turned blue when wet. This made sure we were changing their diapers enough each day.
On top of everything else, my boys seemed to be comfortable in Pampers!
Huggies Natural Care Baby Wipes, Refill, 648 ct, Fragrance Free, Hypoallergenic, Aloe and Vitamin EAnother at the top of the must have baby registry items list is baby wipes. Just as with diapers, you will be going through lots of wipes during changes. You probably also use them to wipe up formula or even spit up! I always added several boxes of wipes to my baby registries, as well as the little travel size packs that fit perfectly in the diaper bag.
We mostly went with Huggies wipes for our kiddos. They have multiple size bags and boxes, depending on how much you want to stock up. They also make these cute little wipe bags what come in some of the products that you can refill and keep in the diaper bag.
7. Travel System
Graco Fastaction Fold Jogger Click Connect Travel System, Gotham With both children, we opted for a travel system. We liked how the infant car seat and stroller matched and could be used together to transport our little ones. Graco is our top choice for car seats and strollers, so we went with their products for both of our boys – with an extra base for Daddy’s car.
We used the Graco Jogger travel system with our younger son. It was really nice, and the large, sturdy tires on the stroller could be pushed through gravel, dirt, and other terrain. Living in a small town, you can imagine we have some dirt and rocks to cross a lot!
8. Boppy Nursing Pillow
Boppy Nursing Pillow and Positioner, Peaceful JungleThough I didn’t breastfeed my boys, the Boppy was a life saver in so many ways! If your arms start to get tired during a feeding you can prop them and your baby on top of the Boppy for comfort. I also used it to sit on while recovering from my tear during delivery. As my boys got older, I used the pillow to help them learn to sit up without help.
There are many covers available for the Boppy pillow. You can match it to your baby’s bedding or find a fun pattern you like. Lots for boys, girls, and gender neutrals too!
9. Swaddling Blankets
Ziggy Baby Muslin Swaddle Blankets, 48×48, Arrow, Cross, Grey/White, 3 PackOne of my boys loved to be swaddled when he was brand new. He would sleep so good when wrapped tightly in one of these swaddling blankets.
The younger boy didn’t care for swaddling much, but we still used these blankets with him. We just didn’t wrap him so snugly.
These swaddling blankets were also good for covering baby during a cool day or a trip to and from the car in his infant car seat. I think they got used as burp cloths a time or two as well!
Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard with Reversible Napper and Changer, Go GreenA pack and play is a great way to free up your arms for chores around the house. Maybe you want to occupy your baby while you fold a load of laundry or wash some dishes. The spacious interior gives infants, babies, and even toddlers room to play while being safe from any danger. This Graco Pack and Play playard – our top choice – comes with a bassinet insert that’s great for diaper changes too.
Perhaps the most convenient thing about a pack and play is it can become a temporary bed when away from home. Forego asking the hotel for a baby crib and simply take the pack and play with you on vacation!
11. Sleep Sheep
Cloud B Soother – Sleep SheepBoth of my boys had a Cloud b Sleep Sheep attached to the outside of their crib when they were infants. Having outside the bed prevented any dangers from them sleeping with a stuffed animal. Luckily, there’s a little Velcro loop on the back of the head to secure the plush wherever you want him.
This super soft plush plays a variety of soothing sounds, including the beach, womb noises, rain, and more. My oldest seemed to like the ocean best, while my youngest preferred the womb sounds.
There is a timer on the sheep so it’s not playing all night and draining the batteries. I think the limit was 45 minutes, which was plenty for my boys to get to sleep.
12. Video Baby Monitor
Summer Infant In View Digital Color Video Baby MonitorI don’t know about you, but I was one worried mama when my older son came along. I didn’t have a video baby monitor with him, but I did get one for my second child. I would say, hands down, this is one of the most must have baby registry items!
Since my boys slept better in their own rooms, I loved having the opportunity to SEE the baby without going in and disturbing him. It gave me the peace of mind I needed to get some rest when he was asleep too.
I always liked the temperature function as well, so I knew my baby’s room wasn’t too hot or too cold.
13. Ear Thermometer
Braun Ear ThermometerAn ear thermometer is one of those must have baby registry items that you can use well beyond the infant months. My boys are 6 and 3 now, and we still swear by this Braun Ear Thermometer. I feel it is more accurate than trying to coax them into holding a thermometer under their tongue – and you know they would NEVER let me use a rectal thermometer on them now!
This ear thermometer comes with disposable covers, so there is no cleaning the device each time you check for a fever. Just stick the tip into the row of covers to get on on, check the temperature, then click the button to pop it into the trash can.
14. Crib Bedding Set
Elephants Blue/Grey 10 pc crib set including Bumper PadOne of the first things we picked out for our boys was their bedding. We already had an idea of the sets we wanted before finding out the gender, so once we knew they were boys, the decision was easy to make! I like the bed in
I like the bed in a bag sets that include the fitted sheet, blanket, and other nursery accessories. This made sure everything coordinated in their bedrooms.
I usually bought the bedding and had the other items (extra sheets, rug, wall art, lamp, etc) on my baby registry.
15. Baby Towels & Washcloths
Bamboo Hooded Bath Towel & Washcloth SetYou don’t want to be using regular size bath towels on your tiny baby! Plus, most baby towels and washcloths are much softer than what is made for kids and adults. I loved getting the hooded towels, so the boys
I loved getting the hooded towels, so the boys were wrapped well from head to toe as we took them from the bathroom to their bedroom to dress them. You will want 5-6 towels and 10 washcloths for your baby.
You will want baby 5-6 towels and 10 washcloths, so add these to the baby registry!
16. Baby Bath Tub
Fisher-Price Precious Planet Whale of a TubHaving a small baby bath tub made getting our boys clean super easy when they were little. We placed the tub into the kitchen sink, so they were still at a good height for us to bathe them without stooping over. My older son had a hammock insert in his tub, which he hated. It kept him out of the water for most of the bath and so he stayed cold.
I recommend the one that allows your baby to sit in the water. My younger son loved one that was similar ot this whale one from Fisher Price. This tub even comes with a cute little cup for rinsing the hair and body.
17. Baby Care/Grooming Kit
The First Years American Red Cross Baby Healthcare And Grooming KitI always asked for two of these kits, one for the nursery and one for the diaper bag. You never know when your little one may need a nail trim or file! This is definitely one of the must have baby registry items, but it is sometimes overlooked.
Along with nail clippers, you will also find a medicine dispenser, thermometer, brush, nasal bulb syringe, and more.
All of these items are good to keep on hand when you are on the go! Everything fits nicely in the included storage pouch so you can always find what you need, when you need it.
Gerber Unisex-Baby 2 Pack Sleep N Play Zip Front DucksLittle baby sleepers are mostly what your tiny arrival will be in most of those first days. They are easy to put on and take off, and the snaps make diapers changes easy too.
They are comfortable for pajamas but still look okay for baby to wear out. Sleepers are typically good for all year round, even during the summer. Your baby will be exposed to the air-conditioned house and could probably use something to shield her entire body.
Carter’s always makes the most adorable sleepers for baby boys and girls. We stocked up on these for both of our kids, as well the Gerber brand. They are affordable and allow for an easy change after a diaper blow out or spit up explosion!
19. Bottle Drying Rack
Baby Bottle Drying Rack Countertop GrassSome people may not think of a drying rack as one of the must have baby registry items. However, the Boon Grass Bottle Drying Rack was so handy for us. It was a great place to store clean bottles while they dried – and often, until their next use.
And who wouldn’t want a fancy patch of green grass on the kitchen counter?!
Usually the Boon drying rack could hold 4-5 bottles, that’s including the nipples, rings, and lids. Every now and then, you should remove the grass from the white base and wash and dry it out. Water does collect in there so you need to make sure it stays clean!
20. Sippy Cups
Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature First Sips Transition CupBefore you know it, your little one will be ready to try out a sippy cup rather than always taking the bottle. The baby registry is a great way to stock up on these cups now. Both of our boys liked the Tommy Tippee cups when they were transitioning from the bottle. The handles were perfect for their little grips, and they were able to catch onto the cup’s spout quickly!
Both of our boys liked the Tommy Tippee cups when they were transitioning from the bottle. The handles were perfect for their little grips, and they were able to catch onto the cup’s spout quickly!
The Tommee Tippee sippy cup comes with a lid to make it easy to carry in the diaper bag without spilling.
21. Baby Bullet
Magic Bullet Baby BulletAnother great baby registry essential! Many parents like making their baby’s food nowadays. Allergies can be controlled when you know exactly what is going into your little one’s mouth. Plus, you ensure they are getting the nutrients he needs and nothing else.
With our first, we used a manual baby food maker and it was SUCH a pain. However, the Baby Bullet works similar to a food processor so it took the hassle and difficulty out of making our second son’s food.
The Baby Bullet comes with multiple blades to mash up strong veggies like carrots. There are also six containers to make a batch of baby food ahead of time. I wish I had invested in one the first time around, for sure!
22. Boba Baby Carrier
Boba 4G Carrier, Dusk, 0- 48 MonthsIt’s no secret that babywearing is a hot trend in parenting these days. With its benefits, I don’t see it going away any time soon either. The Boba 3G Carrier was perfect for our second son, which is when we gave babywearing a go.
The carrier was perfect for taking him out and about. It freed up our hands without the need for a big, bulky stroller. Trips to the grocery store, mall, or just to a family member’s house were easier when we could carry the baby on our chest.
Plus, this location helped soothe him when he was tired or just irritable. With this carrier, you can also carry a toddler or preschooler under 48 pounds on your back!
23. Diaper Bag
Skip Hop Dash Signature Messenger Diaper Bag, Heather GreyThe diaper bag is one of the most important baby purchases you will make. It’s the “nursery away from home” that you will carry everywhere! Do you opt for a large shoulder bag? A simple backpack?
We went with two different bags on our baby registry. First, was the Skip Hop. This bag held everything we needed for our newborn – clothes, diapers, bottles, wipes, etc. As he got older, however, the large diaper bag seemed to be overkill.
Once they were about 5 months old, we switched to the smaller Skip Hop Animal Backpack (the oldest had the monkey, the youngest had the elephant). They were too cute and held everything our older baby needed, which was fewer diapers and bottles, a single change of clothing, and toys.
24. Baby Book
Pearhead Chevron Baby Memory Book Record all of your baby’s precious memories in a special book that he can look back on as he gets older. Each of my boys have their own baby book, though I am a little behind on keeping them updated.
Even with everything being shared on social media these days, I think it’s still important to have a physical copy of milestones and mementos for our kids to treasure.
With this adorable memory book, you can add your baby’s footprint and photo to the front too.
25. Breast Pump
Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with On the Go ToteIf you plan to breastfeed, a breast pump will be one of the must have baby registry items for you! The pump comes in handy when you have extra milk that your baby can’t drink. Trust me, it gets painful if you don’t express that milk!
Plus, if you are going to let your spouse or family feed the baby too, you need a pump in order to fill the bottles for feeding times. The Medela Breast Pump is the one I used with both of my boys. Though I didn’t breastfeed the first one very long (and the second one even less) I knew I wanted to give it a go, so I had a pump on hand.
26. High Chair
Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat, Brown/TanBefore you know it, your baby will be able to join the family at the table. Even if she’s still eating just baby food or formula, having your little one at the dinner table lets her socialize and be included. Even after two children, I am still torn on which high chair to recommend the most.
In our home, we used a seat that fits into a kitchen table chair. That way, there wasn’t extra floor space taken up. The tray of that seat comes off, to become a booster seat when your toddler wants to be at the table but still needs a little assistance with height.
On the other hand, my sister uses a Graco High Chair for my niece and they love it. They don’t have an extra kitchen chair like we do, and their larger kitchen allows for space for the stand-alone high chair.
Gerber Unisex-Baby Newborn 3 Pack Interlock Dribbler Bib Frog, Yellow/Green, One SizeTo help cut down on baby laundry, you are going to need several bibs when your little one arrives. You will want a clean one to put on for each feeding.
I always preferred the ones that velcro around the neck rather than the over the head bibs. It is hard to remove the latter when your baby gets them dirty during a meal!
Bibs are great for catching spit up so your baby’s outfit isn’t in need of a change each time. Plus, they help with drooling once the baby starts teething. Once they are eating table foods, I recommend the Baby Bjorn silicone bibs. They are super easy to clean and have a pocket to catch food.
28. Teething Toys
Little Toader Teething Toys, Baconease Appe-TeethersThough they aren’t necessary when the baby first comes home, teething toys may be needed as early as four months. These toys give your baby a safe surface to chew on as those little teeth start coming through the gums.
It can be very soothing for irritated gums to have a place to chew and help the teeth break the surface.
These food teething toys are just too cute! They are newer, so my kids didn’t have them. I would have totally bought the bacon one for both boys!
29. Bath Toys
Munchkin Float and Play Bubbles Bath Toy, 4 CountBathtime is more fun with toys! For newer babies, simple rings or brightly colored floating toys are enough for entertainment. Just something to hold in their hand as you bathe them. Maybe a distraction for babies that don’t like baths very much.
As they get older, you may want to let them play with boats or toys that squirt water. They may want to spend more time in the bath solely to play.
Toddlers also enjoy bath paints, so you may want to add those to your registry as well.
30. Diaper Pail
Munchkin Step Diaper Pail Powered by Arm & HammerYou definitely need a diaper pail in the baby’s nursery. Tossing the dirty diaper in the pail will eliminate smells thanks to the Arm & Hammer baking soda inside the pail.
The special liners stay put so you don’t have to fight with a mess when replacing the bag.
We loved the Munchkin Diaper Pail and used it with both kids. I like that there’s a step to open the lid now – wish we had one like that with our boys!
