Dealing with a colicky baby is probably one of the most helpless feelings in the world. As a new parent, all you want to do is enjoy your new bundle of joy — and all they want to do is cry. It is even worse not being able to soothe them when they are upset.

#1. Take off Work
If it’s possible for you to take time off work, then I encourage you to do so. Everyone in your house is going to be exhausted. Colicky babies have no rhyme or reason. Sometimes they cry in the morning and sometimes at night. It’s nearly impossible to get any work done, so if you have the resources it’s wise to take some time off (I say this from experience).
#2.Rely on Your Spouse
Nothing will probably try your patience more than having a colicky baby. There has never been a better time to rely on your spouse. You’re going to need them during this time. If you don’t have a significant other to help you out during this time, it’s great to have a support system you can rely on. Even the best parents are tried during this difficult time. Listening to a child cry for hours on end can break your heart and your spirit. Get your support team lined up.
#3. Try Different Things
When I was faced with a colicky baby at home I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. Different babies will react to different things. Experiment to see what works, such as eliminating foods from your diet (if breastfeeding), using probiotics, rocking, or using loud sounds. I know at this point, you will try anything for a little sanity.
#4. Spend Time with Older Children
If you have older children at home, it’s important to remember what your colicky child will turn into (a beautiful little human). Colic might seem to last forever, but in reality it’s just a small window of time. Try to enjoy your baby during this time and spend time with your older children as well. Maybe now is a great time to ask your other children to help out in the best ways they know possible.
#5. Understand You’re Not Alone
There are a lot of myths behind colic and how a parent should feel or deal. There are going to be times when you feel frustrated, during those times it’s important to have a plan in place. You know, someone to call in case you need a break. You may never think this will happen to you, but it’s always best to just move forward with a plan. Just know that you are not alone in this colicky phase of life. Thousands of parents deal with colicky children a year and no one understands why this happens.
