With the beautiful Spring weather upon us, more people are spending time outdoors. We have also been keep the house cool (and saving money_ by opening the windows rather than turning on the A/C. Unfortunately, both of these have been causing issues with allergies. Just one third of the way through May, and my oldest and I have already been battling itchy eyes, runny noses, and sneezing.
Luckily, there are some simple methods for reducing allergens in your home so you can breathe easier. We are doing all we can to enjoy the weather without having to invest in crates of tissues! The following are six easy ways that allergens can be greatly reduced so you aren’t suffering from Spring time sniffles.
1. Dust your entire home regularly. The most obvious places – tables, counters, electronics, etc, are probably cleaned on a weekly basis. However, it’s important you don’t forget the areas where dust and dirt can become trapped, including beneath the fridge, deep within the carpet, and near your pet’s comfortable space.
2. Clean your bedding weekly. It can be a pain to strip the beds so often, but it’s a must if you suffer from seasonal allergies. It’s easy for dust mites and other debris to becoming trapped in your sheets. This means you will be breathing it in during the 7-8 hours of sleep you get each night. A clean bed will help keep your sinuses clear!
3. Check windows for mold often. It’s not surprising that many homeowners find mold and condensation collecting along the window frames and sills. Make sure you keep these areas clean to help reduce allergens in your home.
4. Keep the windows closed, especially during high pollen days. Speaking of windows, it may be best to keep them closed if you want to keep our as much pollen, dust, and other allergens as possible. As much as we love to have a fresh breeze blowing through our home, we have to be careful we aren’t inviting in all of those things that make us sneeze and wheeze!
5. Store soiled laundry appropriately to avoid mold and other allergens. Many people have their dirty clothes hamper in the closet, but anything damp can cause the mold to grow – which could wreak havoc on your body. Choose a hamper that is well ventilated, wash dirty laundry frequently, and consider storing dirty items in the laundry room away from your family to reduce allergens.
6. Replace your air filters often. Filters for your heating and cooling system are only so effective before they must be switched out with a new one. Using Filtrete filters can help reduce airborne allergens in your home by attracting and capturing dust, pollen, and lint. The more of that debris out of the air your family is breathing, the better!
