How to Start Blogging
Learning how to start blogging is much easier than you may think. And setting a blog up isn’t very costly either! Once you have a blog up and running, you can monetize it in several different ways to make your initial investment back. Note: The initial investment of $57.23 is for one year of blogging!
Blogging is where I really started to make money online, and it’s made me the most income to date. Where else can you start a very lucrative BUSINESS for less than $60?

If you want to learn how to start blogging, you are going to need a domain and web hosting.
Now, you could do a free blog, but that is NOT the way to go if you want to make money. Your abilities on those sites are limited, and people have had their blogs deleted for no reason. Since you don’t own the space, you run a huge risk of all your hard work being gone without warning.
Plus, many advertisers and brands shy away from free blogs because they don’t see them as professional. And since you can get web hosting very affordably, you don’t want to give people a reason not to work with you!
HELPFUL BLOGGING DICTIONARY
To help make it easier for you to understand exactly what you are purchasing when learning how to start blogging, think of it this way…
Web Hosting = Rental Land
WordPress = Rental Home
Domain Name = Physical Address
Your domain name is the link that people will type in to find your blog. Here, my domain name is frommomsdesk.com
WordPress is like your rental home. It is where your blog will “live”.
Web Hosting is the space you will rent to place your “home” (your blog).
How to Start Blogging in 4 Easy Steps
STEP 1: PURCHASE YOUR DOMAIN NAME
For domain names, I have always used and loved NameCheap. They are the most affordable and offer the highest quality customer service, in my experience. Decide on the right domain name for your blog. It should be something that will reflect what your content will be about.
Here’s some examples:
BusyBudgeter.com: Offers budgeting tips and solutions to help busy people lead a balanced life.
SouthernGirlRamblings.com: A (previous) personal blog where I shared my thoughts, opinions, and other ideas
SouthernSavers.com: A large deal site that shares coupons and discounts for stores in the Southern USA.
You should choose a domain name that you feel like encompass your site and one that you can live with. Changing the name is not easy, so this is a decision you should make carefully. Once you have come up with an idea that is available, visit NameCheap to register the domain.
Search Google for the current NameCheap code to save a few cents. I usually search “NameCheap code March 2017”. Replace the month and year with the correct info. This will make your domain name $9.83 for the first year.
STEP 2: PURCHASE YOUR HOSTING PLAN
How to Start Blogging with Siteground Hosting
Siteground is a web hosting company I highly recommend. They are super cheap for web hosting, and I have always heard great things about them.
Why choose Siteground?
- Super easy start blogging with WordPress. Siteground will even install WordPress for you at no charge! Note: WordPress is the free platform you will use for your blog. It is simple to use and offers SO many customizations and features, you won’t be disappointed. This version of WP is different from having a free blog at WordPress.com.
- Sites on Siteground load faster! Comparing them with 12 other popular web hosts, Siteground websites load in about 1.3-1.7 seconds, where the average time for all was 3 seconds.
- Siteground offers great security for your blog, so you don’t worry about getting hacked!
- You will have a self-hosted blog. No worries about your work being deleted.
- Superior customer service. Live chat, support tickets, and even phone support are available, with answers within minutes!
To get the ball rolling, you’ll head over to Siteground and decide on a plan. Starting out, you should go with the “StartUp” plan for just $3.95 per month. This offers plenty of space and bandwidth (what is used when you get traffic to your blog) for someone just beginning. This will be $47.40 for your first year.
Click the “Get Started” button under the plan you wish to purchase to complete your transaction. You will receive all of the information needed via email to get your blog up and running on your new web hosting as soon as you complete the purchase.
That’s all of your required expenses to start blogging, which total $57.23!
STEP 3: CONNECT YOUR BLOG TO YOUR WEB HOSTING
In order for your domain name and web hosting to work together, you must connect the two. Once you sign up for Siteground hosting, you will receive information on your account via email. In there, there will be two name servers. You need to give this information to NameCheap in order for your domain name to be connected to your hosting.
Sign into your NameCheap account and navigate to your Domain List. You should see the domain name you just purchased. Click the “Manage” button to the right of the domain name.
Scroll down just a bit until you see the “Nameservers” section. Change the drop down menu there to “Custom DNS”. On the two lines below, copy and past the name server information you were sent by Siteground (one address per line). Click the green checkmark to the right to save your settings.
It may take up to 24 hours for your domain name and web hosting to be connected. However, in my experience, it is usually ready to go within 10-15 minutes.
STEP 4: INSTALLING WORDPRESS
To install WordPress, you will need to access your cPanel. Refer to the log in details emailed to you from Siteground once you purchased hosting.
Siteground offers free manual installation of WordPress for new users! That is definitely a nice perk to take advantage of.
If you prefer to install WordPress yourself, follow the steps to use the Siteground Wizard here. It only takes 2 minutes!
STEP 5: ACCESS YOUR BLOG
Visit yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php in order to sign into your WordPress dashboard. Use the username and password you just created in the WordPress installation steps above. From here, you can write your first blog post, change your blog’s theme, add plugins, and more.
