Next week, my 5 year old will start Kindergarten! Though this is his first year of elementary school, he has some experience already. He was in a full day pre-kindergarten, so he knows the ordeal of waking up early and getting to school on time.
With the summer being a full three months, however, the morning routine we kept while he was in school has definitely disappeared. Sawyer has been allowed to sleep later, we forget some of the usual morning tasks, and we have been less than healthy with breakfast and other things.
For the past couple weeks, I have been making a slow and steady shift back to our normal school day mornings. When in school mode, Sawyer’s mornings look like this:
- Out of bed by 6:40am
- Gets dressed and combs his hair

- Out the door by 7:10am
Last year, Sawyer ate breakfast at school each morning. We may be adding it into the routine this year, however, so that’s something to think about. Below are the ways we are working on getting back to a healthy morning routine in our house.
- Start early. It’s a good idea to start implementing the school morning routine within the last two weeks of summer. This way, it’s not a shock to your kids when they have to be up super early after being allowed to sleep until 8am or later during the summer.
- Make it easy. Most of the morning prep can be done the night before. Lay out your child’s outfit, socks, and shoes for the following day.
