Earlier this month, James and I attended the Cirque Du Soleil performance of KURIOS at Atlantic Station in Atlanta. Having seen Amaluna in the past, I was excited to attend this show. We received tickets in exchange for this coverage, but all opinions are mine!
About KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities
In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a Seeker discovers that in order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, we must first learn to close our eyes.
In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker is convinced that there exists a hidden, invisible world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. A collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor in an attempt to ignite the Seeker’s imagination, his curios jump to life one by one before his very eyes.
KURIOS contains a ton of strong, powerful, and flexible artists. Amazing feats requiring flexibility and balance were performed before our eyes. It was truly fascinating to watch! There were a variety of acts, so you weren’t bored at all. There was a juggler, rope artists, contortionists, and more.
I think our favorite act was the man that balanced on several stacked chairs. The chairs were added on top of each other in such weird ways, you may think they would fall!
After the show, we were invited down to the stage for a question and answer session with one of the artists, Karl L’ecuyer and a press rep. Here are a few questions that were discussed.
Q: How do the families work? Do they travel together or stay home while the artist is on the road performing?
A: It is different for each family. Some travel together, especially if a husband and wife are in the same show. For me (the artist we spoke with), my wife is also a performer but not in this show. She is in Germany right now and I have our two kids with us. My father is with me to help with the kids.
Q: How many times has KURIOS been performed? Is it always the exact same performance every time?
A: KURIOS has now been done almost 700 times. There are 46 artists performing in the show. If someone gets ill or injured, they will be replaced and then the show could be a little different. While there are variations depending on who is performing, most shows are very similar.
Q: How do you choose to come back to Atlanta year after year?
A: This is the 7th show done in Atlanta. The audience always gives us a great response. They are always very excited and there is a great response. Also, a couple of the artists are from Atlanta.
Q: How long does it take to put up the tent and set up for the show?
A: It takes 6 days to put up, but only 2 days to take it down after we are done in a city. There are 116 people that travel with the show. 60 of those are in charge of the set up/take down, and then we hire around 100 local people to help. It takes 65 trailers to move everyone and everything from one city to the next.
Q: Is there are a lot of family performers in KURIOS?
A: There are quite a few married couples in the performance, and the guys on the aerial straps are brothers.
