Many families enjoy having the mom stay at home, but what happens when a second income is needed? With the three of us, it would be difficult for us to mange if I didn’t have a work at home job. The good thing is, there are many different types of work that a stay at home mom could get into which would help provide for her family.
Below are ten types of work at home mom jobs to help you get started earning an extra income.
Of course, I had to mention this one first! Blogging can be a hobby for many people, but others use it as an income stream. You can earn money from blogging through affiliate marketing, advertising, sponsored posts, and social media campaigns. I must note, however, that blogging isn’t an immediate paying job for work at home moms. It takes time to build your blog, social media accounts, and traffic.

2. Freelance Writing
Along with blogging, this is how I got my start working from home. I quit my full-time job in March 2008 so that I could focus on going to college. However, we still had bills to pay, so I got into creating web content for online clients. I got my start on job bidding sites such as Elance, but it’s difficult to find decent paying work on those sites nowadays. It can be beneficial for someone looking to build their writing portfolio and resume. The real money comes from working for private clients and SEO companies.
3. Customer Service/Call Center
Many work at home moms earn a living by answering the phone for large companies in the comfort of their home. Online training can be provided, and it’s a lot like working in a call center – though you are doing it all without leaving the house! For these types of WAHM jobs, you need a telephone line with long distance, a very good telephone, headset, and a very quiet place to work. Certain companies may also have computer and equipment requirements, depending on the exact needs of the position.
This type of job is very similar to freelance writing, though you will be on the other side of the desk, so to speak. Authors, freelance writers, and others that are responsible for having flawless content hire editors to check their books, documents, and anything else that needs to look professional. To land the good editing roles, it’s good to have a degree in Journalism or English.

5. Web Design
If you are proficient in building websites, there is a HUGE demand in this type of WAHM job market. Not only can you work for companies that offer web design, you can also become your own boss and offer the services yourself. Think of how many bloggers there are out there. Wait, let’s break it down even further…just think of how many “mom bloggers” there are out there? Most want their own unique look, which is why web design services are so popular.
Some people make money by selling their crafts or other items at home. WAHM’s can open a store on Ebay or Etsy, depending on what they want to sell. Ebay can be used to sell anything from used clothing, appliances, or crafty items. Etsy is all about handmade products, so if you enjoy making your own candles, bags, soaps, make-up, or anything of that sort, I recommend opening an Etsy store.
7. Social Media
This type of WAHM job is related to blogging, though it goes a couple steps further. If you are an expert on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and all the other social media sites out there, you may find that a company is willing to pay for your services. It’s easier for brands to hire someone online that is already proficient in the ways of social marketing rather than trying to hire and train a newbie. Plus, they benefit from you working at home because then you don’t need an office at their location.
8. Virtual Assistants
Becoming a virtual assistant can encompass a variety of jobs, all of which can be performed at home. It will really depend on the employer’s needs as to what you will be doing. Typical duties of a VA include creating documents, data entry, making telephone calls, promoting websites, products, services, or special promotions, and keeping up with email or social media accounts.
9. Medical Billing/Coding
It’s becoming a trend for doctor’s offices to outsource their medical billing and coding to work at home moms. Again, this makes it easy on them because they don’t have to have someone on-staff that needs a desk. Most WAHM’s that do this type of work have a certificate or degree from an accredited program. Because it’s becoming so popular, it can be hard to find open positions in this field.
There are different types of transcription, but all of them are in need. There is medical, legal, and general, all of which can be done at home. It’s good to have some education if you wish to do transcription for a company. You will also need the proper equipment, such as an audio player, foot pedal, headset, and reliable computer and Internet.
